Afternoon Craving: Rum Raisin Ice Cream

Crepe and Rum Raisin Ice Cream
With temperatures outside soaring to record highs, it seems weird to be craving anything that isn't ice cream.  Of course, one can't sustain themselves on ice cream alone, which is why I am craving a full-balanced meal from Chez Oskar in Fort Greene. Don't worry, the meal ends with a very special scoop of ice cream.

We arrived to Chez Oskar one hot summer night by chance.  We had agreed to meet up with friends in Fort Greene for drinks later that night but wanted to get a bite to eat beforehand.  After a brief look at the menu in the window, we decided to take a chance on Chez Oskar and walk inside.  Although the outdoor seating was inviting, the indoors had air conditioning and so our decision to sit inside was easily made.  Walking into Chez Oskar was like taking a step back in time; the decor is reminiscent of a fancy French restaurant of yesteryear, but with a decidedly cooler vibe. The decor was best described as "funky" {after all, Chez Oskar is "Le Funky French Bistro"}.  In other words, there were bright colors everywhere and I was sitting next to a giant champagne bottle for no reason.  I didn't really mind.

We poured over the menu.  I was very tempted by the mussels but, perhaps having cooled down enough from the air conditioning, I decided on the warm Short Rib and Brussels Sprouts.  I'm glad I did.  The short rib was smothered under juicy mushrooms.  The meat itself was tender and fatty.  As each bit of meat fell apart and was placed into my mouth, I felt comforted and warm {and not because it was in the high 80 degrees outside}.  The Brussels spouts, on the other hand, were a stark contrast to the delicate short rib.  They were hard and added a bit of crunch, creating a nice texture to the dish.

It wasn't very hard for the short rib and Brussels sprouts to fill up my stomach but we decided to order a Crepe with Rum Raisin Ice Cream anyway.  The crepe was, of course, delicious in every way since it was covered in honey.  But the rum raisin ice cream was out of this world; I don't think I've ever tasted such a strong alcohol flavor in an ice cream before.  This isn't to say it was offensive {in fact, it was quite good}, but let's just say it wasn't that hard to get a little buzz off Chez Oskar's scoop of rum raisin.  It was very addictive.

Our meal at Chez Oskar was so good that we declared to each other, "We should eat in Fort Greene more often!"  And really, on a hot day like today {and tomorrow, and the day after that...} who wouldn't want some very rummy ice cream?
