Afternoon Craving: Banana Ice Cream

Ice cream from Brooklyn
This afternoon - the Thursday afternoon before Memorial Day - seems like torture.  The three day weekend and the official start of the summer seems so close and yet so far.  So it only seems appropriate that this afternoon I'm craving the official food of the summer - good old ice cream.  And not just any ice cream, but ice cream born in Brooklyn {of course!} - the Banana Whama ice cream from Phin & Phebes.

A Culinary Feast at the Great GoogaMooga

The crowd watches Matt & Kim on stage.
Despite warnings from friends and various blogs, the SO and I braved the Great GoogaMooga on Saturday.  After all, we had just completed our first half marathon and were ready to feast.  With the promise of food from local vendors and live music, the Great GoogaMooga didn't seem like it warranted all the criticism it was getting.  Plus, it was theoretically free, so what could go wrong?

The Diary of a First-Time Half Marathoner: The Brooklyn Half

Runners at the starting line.
A couple years ago, when everyone else I knew started running marathons, I hastily declared to a friend, "Oh, they're just going through a mid-20s crisis."  Secretly though, I had been jealous of their abilities to run distances longer than two miles - my then record on the treadmill.  Everything changed this past Saturday, when I finally gave into my {now late} 20s crisis and participated and {spoiler alert!} completed my first half marathon, the Brooklyn Half.

Afternoon Craving: Sweet Potato Fries

The sweet potato fries at Van Horn.
As I prepare for the Brooklyn Half Marathon {my first!} this Saturday, I've been using this time to justify eating a lot of carbs.  Usually one to stay clear of pasta or french fries {sometimes successfully, sometimes not so successfully}, this week is my excuse to go all out on the pasta, french fries and more.  That's why this afternoon, I'm craving the oh-so-delicious sweet potato fries from Van Horn in Cobble Hill.
